Now any one that knows me will know that I am not a romantic. Not your flowers and chocolates romantic in any case. But there is something about love poems, that gets me right there. I think they are amazing; the level of emotion that they can convey leaves me in awe. I saw the image at the bottom on fffffound and it reminded me how much I love this sentimental bullshit.

There are a few poems that absolutely do it for me, essentially because they aren’t sentimental. Rather they make you believe in humanity again, that make you feel less nihilistic. And being that I now have a platform from which to shout from, I thought I would share some of my favourite poems with you. Apart from these I am a sucker for the ‘Roger was a Razorfish’ poems but that’s for another day.

I CARRY YOUR HEART WITH ME

i carry your heart with me (i carry it in
my heart) i am never without it (anywhere
i go you go, my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)
i fear
no fate (for you are my fate,my sweet) i want
no world (for beautiful you are my world, my true)
and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows
higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that’s keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart (i carry it in my heart)

e.e. cummings

LOVE POEM

Sharing one umbrella
We have to hold each other
Round the waist to keep together.
You ask me why I’m smiling -
It’s because I’m thinking
I want it to rain for ever.

Vicki Feaver

CELIA, CELIA

When I am sad and weary
When I think all hope has gone
When I walk along High Holborn
I think of you with nothing on.

Adrian Mitchell

And if anyone read those and didn’t feel even remotely goey inside, I am sorry to tell you, but you are clearly a robot.
